Kindergarten: Owl Visitors Bring Lessons to Life

Sarah Cooper's students hosted some special visitors this week when docents with HawkQuest brought three owls to the classroom. It was all part of intern Isabel Seixas' unit on nonfiction reporting.
"Students are studying Colorado animals and are researching an animal of their choosing," explains Isabel. "Since owls are native to Colorado and our unofficial class mascot, we invited HawkQuest to teach us more about these beautiful animals."

Kindergartners were introduced to the great horned owl, barn owl and burrowing owl. They learned about each creature's sleeping habits, habitat and diet before a hands-on time of exploring owl pellets and feathers.

Next week, students will share their new knowledge after completing a booklet about their Colorado animals. They are creating booklets including drawings of their animals and facts about the critters' lifestyles.
