Summer is the time to GO LEARN!

Alongside vacations, adventures, hobbies and just plain relaxing, Graland teachers are spending their summer break learning and growing.
Several educators are demonstrating the traits of lifelong learners.
  • Kimm Lucas, Grade 5 English, is attending the 21st Annual August Institute on the Teaching of Writing at Columbia University in New York.
  • Lisa Flannery, Preschool, will learn about Sensory Processing Training through online coursework.
  • Josh Gaffga, Music, is traveling to Connecticut for the FAME Conference 2014, which brings music educators together to share best practices.
  • The entire Grade 7 MESH (math, English, science, history) team is headed to Harvard University for workshops on iPads in the Classroom.
  • Laurie Chandler, Courtney Menk, and Lisa Ross will be in Chicago at the Math in Focus Institute.
Also, we have various collaborative groups working on summer grant projects.
  • A large group including Julie O’Connor, Bryann Nourse, Christi James, Justin Miera, Tony Catanese, Andrea Crane, and Michelle Benge are working on interdisciplinary connections within the Grade 3 social studies curriculum.
  • Michelle Benge and Elizabeth Leddy are linking Lower School science lessons to the Math in Focus program. Adding math concepts will give their curriculum a well-rounded STEM component (science, technology, engineering and math).
  • Speaking of math, Nikki Spiers, Lisa Schreiner, Wendy Demartini, and Laurie Chandler are designing a series of project-based learning activities for kindergartners and first graders that are collaborative in nature and grounded in mathematics.
One learning specialist, Nanette Newman, is traveling to Denmark for a conference on Alzheimer’s research. Anna Newman ‘11 is presenting her model for Alzheimer’s education that she helped design for a Grade 7 service-learning project last spring. Watch for a follow-up story in the back-to-school issue of Graland Today.
