Graland Community Examines Issues of Race

Graland families came out in strong support for History Colorado Center's RACE exhibit at a special event organized by the Graland Inclusivity Forum and Taskforce with assistance from Affinity Groups.

Before viewing the information on the museum's lower level, families mingled over a light lunch and discussed what they hoped to learn from the exhibit.

Marilou Bleecker attended with her grandchildren Claudia (Grade 7) and Mailin Thompson (Grade 4). She wanted the girls to understand how people of different racial backgrounds can get along better.

Cher Crichlow came with her husband, Gregory, his mother Elenora, and the couple's two children to learn more about how the "one race" concept was presented through facts and artifacts.

According to J.J. Rutherford, Graland parent and the museum's director of education, the exhibit in fact focuses on demonstrating there is more that makes people alike than makes them different. The exhibit defined races as White, Asian, Hispanic, Black and American Indian.

Different aspects of human life were on display throughout the lower level. At one station, the information explained that all human life can be traced to Africa. Other stations addressed genetics, skin color, anthropology, politics, civil rights and linguistic profiling, or the way people can make assumptions about a person's race by the sound of his voice.

Special thanks to all those who made time to visit RACE to learn more about this important topic. The exhibit will close January 4 if you have not yet had the chance to ask yourself, "Are we so different?"
