Mr. DeVoss has spent the majority of his career working with middle schoolers, first as a school counselor and now as dean of Grades 5/6. He is also a Grade 6 advisor and co-director of high school placement. Ask him which is his favorite board sport - skateboard, snowboard, wakeboard or surfing!
Favorite Interaction with Students
I like being with students on trips.
Favorite Graland Moment
Any student-driven initiatives that are sound, make me proud.
Graland Trip I Love
I have been on all middle school trips. The South trip is by far the most powerful and experiential, and took me places I may not get to on my own without a very concerted effort. The sixth Southwest trip is high on my list of favorites because of the camping.
I like engaging in formal professional development and cohorts, particularly around equity and multicultural issues. I think all learning is social-emotional learning so those books and workshops always get my attention. Truthfully, the most internal growth and learning for me tends to come from having responsible and sometimes difficult conversations with people. Reflecting on those is powerful.
Visit all the continents.
I caught a guy riding my stolen bike around Denver and got it back single-handedly (nothing physical)! Very satisfying.
Favorite Childhood Memory
Playing catch (baseball) with my dad. When my parents took me to the skatepark (Soccer West) in the BIG city of Wichita and I skated with friends. I remember getting props from the older rippers once in awhile and seeing Tony Hawk do a demo there when I was 15.
