“Mathletes” Show Number Sense

Graland students in Grades 6-8 recently went head-to-head against other middle schoolers in Arapahoe, Denver and Douglas counties in a math competition hosted by the MATHCOUNTS Foundation. Throughout the four rounds - Sprint, Target, Team and Countdown - these “mathletes” applied number knowledge, problem solving and collaboration to gain valuable experience using their math skills.
According to Math Counts Club co-advisor, Jolene Collier, students were excited by the additional challenge the competition offered. “I was proud of them; they learned to quickly recognize patterns and rules to solve the problems,” she says. “It was a great experience for these students who enjoy working hard and having fun with math.”
One competitor, Adam Wang (6), is a member of the Math Counts Club which meets once per rotation to practice math problems provided by MATHCOUNTS. “The competition was nerve-wracking,” he admits. “It was hard and challenging but also a lot of fun.”
He and three other students competed in the team round, bringing home a trophy for highest scoring rookie team. “I liked working on the team to solve the problems, and I was really excited to show our trophy to my classmates.”
Ryan Mandes (6) says he joined the Math Counts Club because math is productive and helps you in life. “I want to get better at math and work on more challenging problems,” he shares.
The Math Counts Club is open to students in Grades 6-8 and is led by Mrs. Collier and Annie Lassiter. Go solve!
