Grade 8: Not Your Ordinary Mathematics

Making math engaging is of the utmost importance for Grade 8 teacher, Mr. Gregory Montoya. This could be seen firsthand in his math class this October when students were asked to make a video (utilizing props and a script) teaching what they learned about scientific notation.
“After learning, practicing, and being assessed on scientific notation, the students in advanced math created demonstrative videos that explain the step-by-step process of adding and subtracting numbers written in scientific method. This included numbers with both similar and dissimilar exponents.” Mr. Montoya said. “Through this project, students were able to practice their mathematical discourse, problem-solving strategies and demonstrate their understanding.

Following the lesson, Mr. Montoya shared that the highlight of the project as an educator was watching the students take ownership of their learning. “I am impressed by the eighth-graders’ willingness to try new things, work collectively as a team, and overcome challenges. After all the challenges of remote learning, it is amazing to see students with such a joy of learning.” Mr. Montoya said.

Keep up the great work, Grade 8 mathematicians!
