THAT DARN DONKEY

That Darn Donkey

A funny anecdote from Rosemary Fetter’s CLIMB EVERY MOUNTAIN: THE STORY OF GRALAND COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL.

Devey Altman, recalls. . .  a story told by her grandfather, Sam Ross, who lived in the Tudor house at 75 Bellaire Street. “ During World War II, our family owned two lots, with a house on one lot and a large victory garden on the other. My grandfather was a serious gardener and an imposing guy who could sometimes be difficult. Since no paved road separated Graland property from ours, the school’s donkey would wander into my grandfather’s large vegetable garden and help himself. One day, my grandfather became so angry he told Georgia Nelson that if she didn’t keep the donkey out of his garden, he was going to shoot it.” Apparently, the problem was resolved amicably, since no donkey fatalities were ever reported
