Grade 8: Impact of Civil Rights Trip Shared

Students fresh from their impactful trip to the deep South where they studied the Civil Rights movement shared their reflections at a Middle School assembly this week. Saedra Gurfinkel (8) kicked off the reflections saying, “Understanding the past helps us create a better future,” before several students described their day-to-day travels and itinerary. They discussed the sites, museums, people and places encountered during the trip, while also teaching a bit of history. Some of the topics covered included Martin Luther King Jr’s life and impact, slavery, civil disobedience and the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing.

“At the STAX Museum, a museum of music and culture for African Americans, we learned how music impacted the lives of thousands of African Americans, giving them hope,” shared Naomi Gillis (8). “Here, in this old theater, was where hundreds of amazing musicians found their sound, a mix of gospel, jazz, and soul. The upbeat music provided large amounts of hope to African Americans in their time of trouble.”

Following the recap, students whose art projects were voted best in class described the symbolism behind their pieces and why the subjects they selected were personally meaningful to them.
