A traveling artist with Cherry Arts visited Andrean Andrus’ class recently to demonstrate and lead a lesson on silk screening. Fourth graders learned all about this ancient Chinese technique that transfers ink onto paper or cloth.

After winning the experience in an auction at the Cherry Creek Arts Festival, Mrs. Andrus was excited to host the organization’s mobile art cart and transform her classroom into a printing studio. Students learned the history of printmaking, how to prep images for printing and the process of silk screening before trying their hand to create two designs on paper.

“I learned about the ink, frame and the fabric,” shares Julia Bograd (4). “When you use more than one color, it’s called split fountain.”

Using stencils provided by Cherry Arts, they took turns making a colorful mountain range and a geometric design on paper sheets. Go create!
