Impacting Students
I really enjoy teaching students how to research using our library's databases and search engines. I love walking them through the process of inquiry and discovery, and seeing the joy when they discover something new about a topic. Technology has really changed the way we think today, and if I can instruct students how to be critical users of information, I will feel successful.
Lifelong Learner
I use Hyperdocs to guide student inquiry, and I love how easy it is to tailor this tool to a student's learning needs. You can include videos, pre-recorded lectures, links to cool stuff ... all the while teaching students how to be responsible users of technology. I also try to stay up to date on what's new in Children's Literature and in technology instruction so I can keep my lessons fresh and engaging.
Favorite Teaching Moment
What I enjoy most is the amount of reader's advisory I get to do every day. Our students are voracious readers and are always looking for a new book. It's so much fun to walk around the library with them and talk about what they like and what they want to know more about, and also what they want to learn from the books they read. I am lucky that I get to help students become independent readers and help them find books they will love to read for fun. It's the best job!
Professional Passion
My professional passion is helping students discover that reading is fun and offers windows into new worlds, and mirrors into their own. Additionally, I feel a responsibility to teach students how to be digital citizens and responsible users of technology. I am passionate about helping students learn how to be safe online, and also about teaching students that technology can and should be used to change the world for the better.
Best Thing about Working at Graland
I love the flexibility Graland offers in allowing me to teach the students what I feel is relevant and important. Library instruction is so unique in that it is curricular. One day we can discuss math or history, while other days we are researching how and why we string Christmas lights on our houses during the holidays.
Favorite Genre
My tastes have changed as I've gotten older. I now am drawn to novels or memoirs written by women that discuss feminist issues or any issue that affects women. I try to pick up a young adult book whenever I can because there are so many new and different titles published in this genre every month! It's such a great time to be a reader today; publishers are really grasping what readers want in terms of diversity and political issues, and technology has really changed the way we can read and discover new books.
