In the spring of 2015, the Middle School Student Support Services Team (SSST) proposed a class, FOL (Foundations of Literacy, later Foundations of learning) for students with diagnosed learning differences; these students would not take a foreign language. The SSST ladies (and one gentleman, yours truly) would support students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade in their MESH classes.

The class, which began in the fall of 2014, included studying for vocabulary tests, annotating novels, organizing a timeline for projects, extra math help with the MS math specialists (Nanette Newman and later, Maleia Clarke), notetaking, paragraph writing, vocabulary drills, etc.

The direction of the class was incumbent upon the students’ needs.  Elky Dorman and Leah Noyes were the main teachers-- Kelly Gaudet and I were assistant teachers.  Later, Leah Noyes offered a class for fifth graders; I had the privilege of working with Kate Kechriotis '19 two to three days a week on English.

I enjoyed the students and my colleagues. I did not believe I was the right person to teach this class, for I was not well-versed in the tools of this new trade; the ladies amazed me with their knowledge of what students needed.

SSST was a remarkable experience for me. Forgive the aside: I can’t believe how much math I learned. Thank you, Nanette and Maleia.
