Grade 1: Unit on Birds Takes Flight

First graders got a visit from the Graland Eagle to launch their year-long unit on birds and bird conservation, and then they followed up that exciting event with a trip to the Bird Conservatory at Barr Lake to find out more about migration.
Exploring the habitat on a beautiful September day, student ornithologists learned about some of the obstacles facing birds that migrate, such as predators, buildings, lights, trash and windows. They also watched as conservatory volunteers put bands on birds so migratory patterns could be documented and studied, used binoculars to scan the sky for feathered friends, and heard about conservation efforts.

The field trip was part of a yearlong focus on these fascinating animals that will include Spanish, art, math, science and service. New this year, they are using an app to keep track of the birds seen here in Denver. Keep your eyes on the skies, first graders!
