Grade 6: Spanish Lesson in the Gates Lab

World language teachers teamed up to offer a learning opportunity in the Gates Lab for sixth-grade Spanish students acquiring new vocabulary words to describe homes.
Led by Diana Quezada, teachers worked with innovation specialist, Jorge Chavez, to create a challenge in which students assembled a 3D puzzle into miniature cardboard houses. Engaged in building their structures, students used tools in the lab and were allowed additional materials to add furniture to the rooms. Using their vocabulary knowledge, they labeled the rooms and contents in Spanish.

Next, each student wrote a descriptive paragraph en español about the residence they built and presented their description orally in class. For their next unit on cities, students will use the cardboard homes to build their own Spanish towns. Ms. Quezada collaborated with Rocio Zeiler and Saul Reyes to design the assignment and to enhance their students’ understanding of new vocabulary terms.
