PreK: Art with Recyclables
Students in Lisa Flannery’s class have been collecting recyclables at home for a repurposed art project with Ms. Grace Lee, ECLC specialist teacher. After bringing in cardboard, milk jugs, plastic bottle caps and other items, they used scissors, tape and paint to transform found objects into imaginative art.
Ms. Lee read the story, “Rosie Revere, Engineer” by Andrea Beaty, to spark ideas about reusing recycled materials to create inventions. Rosie, a young aspiring engineer, collects items found from the trash to build inventions to help others. After experiencing some failures with her inventions, she realizes the only true failure is when you quit.
In class, Beker Rubin spent a good amount of time painting his “bouncing rocket ship” with all the colors, even purple despite his preference for black, orange and green. “It’s a maraca rocket ship because it makes noise,” he shared. Others made a telescope, mac and cheese Maker, bubblegum machine, cantaloupe launcher, A popcorn shaker, and much more!
“With this project, students use their strong creativity and imagination skills to create and build an invention with items they would usually throw out at home,” explained Ms. Lee. “We are giving a whole new meaning to the idea of ‘reusing.’ One of our goals in ECLC is to help build empathy in our students at a young age. Conscious citizens show empathy for each other and our planet as a whole.”
