Family Fun at Innovation Night Celebrates Gates Program 20th Anniversary

Moving through 13 challenge stations set up throughout the Corkins Center, Graland parents had the chance to work alongside their children and practice perseverance, critical thinking, creative thinking, collaboration, experimentation and empathy -- six skills that lead to more productive problem-solving.
Students of all ages and even prospective families joined in for an evening of fun, learning and community building. The Tinker Time-style projects at Family Innovation Night were planned and executed by Graland’s innovation team with help from Gates coaches and student volunteers from the class of 2020. Designed to showcase innovation programming and celebrate the philosophies that guide the Gates program, the activities encouraged parents and children to enjoy hands-on experiences and “tinker, create, innovate.”

“Please make this an annual event!” said Cynthia Palmer. “We were one of the last families to leave as I had to pry my daughters away! Their persistence and ‘grit’ were truly seen last night and even commented on by two of the site volunteers. Highly interactive and fun for all ages as we also brought along my dad (a closet engineer with a brain built for creating) who was stumped at the 3x3x3 cube building. He enjoyed the challenges just as much as my children and is probably still trying to figure out cube placement in his head.”
