Grade 7 Mathematicians

With calculators, formula sheets, pencils and scratch paper in hand, 20 students in Dr. David Hill’s class recently studied a geometry lesson on composite figures – shapes that can be divided into more than one of the basic figures.
To kick off the lesson, students warmed up their problem-solving skills with a quick math game using Kahoot! - an educational app. They were presented with multiple-choice questions requiring them to solve geometry problems within a one-minute time limit; for example, find the volume of a cylinder where r=4.2” and h=14”. Henry Montgomery volunteered at one point to share how he used a geometry formula to correctly solve a problem.

Next, students were released to work independently or virtually with a partner on a graded assignment to demonstrate their understanding of composite figures. Later in the class, students reassembled on the screen to ask questions and get clarification concerning their work.

Before signing off, Dr. Hill said, “Don’t forget to try the challenge questions. There’s no reason to be bored. If you finish your homework quickly, challenge yourself.”
