You Can Do Hard Things

You can do hard things. I know this because you already have!
A few years ago, I was tasked with creating a bulletin board for the Georgia Nelson Building towards the end of the school year. I worked with fourth-grade students to reflect on times in their lives when they had persevered through adversity. I was struck by the life experiences students shared and encouraged them to think back to these examples when faced with future challenges as these adversities had essentially strengthened their “resiliency muscle.” The bulletin board featured the words “You Can Do Hard Things” with pictures and quotes from students.

As the 2019-20 school year comes to a close, it has me thinking about that bulletin board. I’ve been amazed by our community's ability to adjust and overcome the adversities we’ve faced. Children and families have been flexible problem solvers as they’ve embraced their respective new normals. As we transition into summer and our minds turn to next school year, I encourage everyone to reflect back on the many canceled plans, schedule iterations, communication challenges, relationship repairs, technology challenges, and other adversities we’ve encountered and emerged from. Your “resiliency muscle” has been put to work and I’ve been inspired by your perseverance! My hope is that you and your children anchor yourself in knowing that you can do hard things because you already have.
