Grade 1: Taking a Peep at Migrating Birds

First graders observed experts at the Rocky Mountain Bird Conservancy at Barr Lake as they worked to document migrating birds that pass through the area north of Denver. 
Via Skype, students learned how birds like the ruby-crowned kinglet are weighed, measured, assessed, and banded for research purposes. Did you know the “ruby-crowned” part of the kinglet’s name only applies to the males? Females don’t grow the colorful feathers.
