Kindergarten: Lessons from an Author/Illustrator
In social studies, kindergartners are learning about artists and authors from around the world. For a lesson on American illustrator and author, Eric Carle, they also built their fine motor muscles by creating artwork in his unique style.
Carle was inspired by his own dyslexia to help young children learn how to read through the rhythm of the words and language. Now his popular books like “Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See?” and “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” are children’s classics. Mrs. Valiant used the author’s experiences as a struggling learner to bring in lessons of perseverance and being a brave reader.
“To finish our study, students finger painted different pieces of paper and used the pieces to create a picture in the Carle style,” shared Mrs. Helen Valiant.
