Grade 2: Social Studies During Historic Election

November’s historic election provided Ms. Carrie VonderHaar’s second grade class with much opportunity for thoughtful discussion about women’s rights.

Students examined the timeline of progress by exploring the work of women’s suffragists and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg while weaving in the “women to work” movement of the World War 2 era. Finally, they applied civil discourse principles to discuss the significance of electing America’s first female vice president, using the book, "Bold & Brave: Ten Heroes Who Won Women the Right to Vote" by Kirsten Gillibrand to inform their conversations.

At the end of the lesson, they each answered the question, “What would you change if you could?” — a question inspired by “Bold & Brave.”
