Grade 5: Bringing Order to Math Equations

Mathematicians in Mrs. Meggan Dodge’s class worked their way through a self-paced unit this month to understand why math equations must be solved in a particular order - also known as the order of operations.
“They’re learning that they get different answers if they don’t follow the pattern of GEMS - Grouping symbols, Exponents, Multiplication/division, Subtraction/adding,” said Mrs. Dodge. To show their mastery of this essential concept, students made videos, posters, or other concrete demonstrations to share with the class. Next month, they’ll move on to studying fractions. Good luck, Grade 5!
