Grade 4: 10,000 Steps

Students in Courtney Menk’s Grade 4 math class learned recently about the benefits of walking 10,000 steps each day, including advancing one’s heart health and strengthening one’s mental health. This new knowledge was incorporated into a math lesson in which fourth graders chose one of two questions as a project prompt:
  • How far is 10,000 steps?
  • How long would it take me to complete 10,000 steps?
In order to answer their chosen question, students had to gather data. Depending on which challenge they chose, they either had to measure their steps or time themselves walking a certain number of steps.

“Equipped with this information,” said Ms. Menk, “they used the measurement conversions we had recently studied in class to determine how many miles they would go or how many hours it would take. Their work was compiled together into a final poster.”

For parents and others who haven’t done the math, depending on the length of your stride, 10,000 steps is approximately three to  five miles. How long does it take you to walk five miles?
