Grade 6: Veterans Day - “Your Story. My Story. Our Story”

On Friday, November 11, as a continuation of their service learning project and the “Your Story. My Story. Our Story” theme in the Middle School, Grade 6 students heard from veterans in the Graland community and completed various service projects for veterans experiencing homelessness.
The day began with a presentation from Mr. Justin Singleton, the husband of Grade 6 English Teacher Mrs. Katie Singleton. Justin shared his experience in the Navy and how it led to his career in the software industry. Following this talk, Jan from Volunteers of America helped sixth graders make no-sew blankets, toiletry kits, and cards for veterans experiencing homelessness in our community. Following this outreach element, all-school support educator Charlene Haskett ended the day by talking to students about her military experience through the lens of being a woman of color.

Soon, a representative from the St. Francis Center in Denver will be giving a presentation and facilitating a discussion about how people can become homeless, the services that St. Francis Center offers, and the importance of treating all people with dignity.

Keep striving to positively impact our community, Grade 6!
