Grade 6: Southwest Trip
Originating in 1971 (52 years ago), the Southwest Trip provides opportunities each spring for sixth graders to explore and experience the lifestyle of early Coloradans.
Throughout their action-packed six-day excursion the last week of April, the first group of sixth graders discovered local archeology, visited ancient sites, learned about the Ancestral Puebloan people, made pottery, and participated in several Native American traditions, songs, and dances. In addition, students hiked in Mesa Verde National Park, journaled on Pancake Rock, built part of a replica Pueblo structure, and enjoyed many starry nights telling stories by the campfire. The second group of sixth graders is looking forward to more memories and adventures this week during Southwest Trip week two.
