Grade 6: Solving for Empty Bowls
All year, Grade 6 students have been learning about poverty, homelessness, and food insecurity in their math, English, science, history, and art classes and working together to make a difference.
Using what they discovered in their classes, sixth graders organized various activities throughout the year, such as Veteran’s Service Day, where students heard from veterans in our community and worked together to make no-sew blankets, toiletry kits, and cards for veterans experiencing homelessness in Denver. In addition, the Grade 6 Hearts on the Horizon Club planned and organized a candy sale to raise money for an organization of their choice, coordinated and advertised a food drive with the GPA, prepared the food they collected for the Denver Rescue Mission and Growing Home, and hosted the Empty Bowls event this May. During this culminating event, members of the Hearts on the Horizon Club invited Grade 6 families and educators to a soup dinner on campus, where they shared what they learned through the service learning program this year.
