ONCE UPON A TIME

Philip William Hickey

Grace Laird and Virginia Braswell started a kindergarten in a storefront of the Green Lantern Apts. There were two rooms-- one for shop and the other for “usual kindergarten activities,” to quote from Ruth Gorham’s book on Graland’s first fifty years. Later, Hilda Holcombe was hired to assist Miss Laird and Miss Braswell with the eleven children.

One year later, the school moved to a larger space called The Green House at 773 Franklin Street and now housed two grades.  Alas, TGH was too small, and the school moved again to 1012 Pennsylvania St.

I shall save the story about how Graland Country Day School for Boys and Girls found land, an architect, and Georgia Nelson for another posting.
