As I was listing the Heads of School/Headmasters since 1927, I thought about the old Upper School, one of my favorite buildings on campus
In 1951, the Junior High School opened -- Arthur Kent was hired as the Head of the Junior High School and even brought Latin to the school's curriculum; in 1972 two rooms were added to the Junior High building.
This was the Upper School building I knew -- seven classrooms, one of which was called the History Center and at one time had a working fireplace. Thanks to John Rice '94, I was able to recover the old fireplace grate designed with a big G. Oh, I guess I should tell you that the fireplace was behind a wall. John and his crowbar had a great time that Saturday. The grate is in the archives -- I hope to "showcase" it at some alumni event.
The cost of the Junior High School was under $100,000 -- including necessary equipment; the addition cost $50,000.
I loved the building, even though it was a bit of a dump-- a nesting place for mice who just loved to eat my grammar drills and leave "gifts" in the bookcase. I have two lockers from the building and a door from one of my classrooms -- in the Archives.
