MASTER TEACHER: KATIE DODGE (1956-1988)

Philip William Hickey

Here is an excerpt written by Karen Oldham, mother of Chris’ 81 and Matt ‘91. Karen was our elementary school librarian as well as our head librarian:

“Over her thirty-two years as Graland’s librarian, Katie talked books to students, read thousands of stories aloud, and encouraged reading in any way she could. She invited authors to visit the school, promoted literary contests, and was a role model for the well-educated person. With her sense of humor, love of literature and love of the arts, she shaped the attitudes of students and a library collection that will serve many future Graland generations.

“Katie was Graland’s first full-time librarian and set the standard for library services for all who followed. She selected books and materials that reflected the best in writing, illustration, artistry, creativity, and importance of ideas. She filled the library with books, music, art, and intellectual activity-- the perfect ingredients for the learning center of a unique place like Graland.”
