GENEVIEVE JONES

Philip William Hickey
Once upon a time, Graland offered rhythm classes to its students.

An excerpt from Mrs. Gorham’s book:

“For many years, Genevieve Jones taught rhythm classes to both boys and girls from kindergarten through sixth grade. . . Miss Jones worked closely with the teachers since assemblies reflected work being done in the classroom, and rhythm was an important part of any assembly. She emphasized not only exercises in muscular control, but also creative expression. Often, Greek myths were told through group dancing; the procession to the Parthenon in honor of Athena was reenacted. . . Egyptian farmers, Roman soldiers or senators, medieval jesters plus lords and ladies, pilgrims, pioneers, English Morris dancers, Aztec warriors. . . and many more performed on Graland’s stage or the east lawn to delighted audiences. On May Day, the traditional Maypole dancers showed their skillS.  Teachers called upon Genevieve Jones constantly. . . Children learned to work together in a common endeavor and to perform. . . with freedom and joy.”
