ALUMNI COMMENTS ON THEIR GRALAND EDUCATION

Philip William Hickey
When Mrs. Gorham was writing her book, she asked alumni, many of whom were her former students, to comment on their education.

Here are some comments that captured my attention:

"Graland made a difference in my life. Besides providing a strong academic program, Graland offered many opportunities to excel in other areas, especially sports. I believe the smallness of the school and the richness of the school life made Graland special to me. Many of my current hobbies and interests stem from my first endeavors at Graland."
-- Jim Arneill

"What fun it was to explore the endless prairies to the east; the only things out there were a clay quarry and a brick kiln. . . I remember learning, that no matter what, you don’t go through a door, until you are sure it is open. . . Unless quarantined, we were there because there were just too many exciting things to miss a day. Graland was a child’s . . . dream come true."
-- Madeline McWhinney Dale

"Every grade was a new world. . . I received the best education that anyone could have. I realize that as I watch my three children go through their elementary grades. What an inspiration Miss Nelson was to us all. . . It was a privilege to know her."
-- Barbara Gorham Elliott

". . . We worked together. . . we played together, too. We learned and grew from each mistake . . . Things came to us slowly then; we were impatient. But looking back now, they came too fast. The feeling left with us was lasting."
-- Tom McGonagle

By the way, dearest colleagues, the people I have chosen represent old Graland. These four alumni are people I know and respect. They ARE Graland School.
