MASTER TEACHER: COLETTE GUIBERTEAU (1957-1986)

Philip William Hickey
Since I am sitting next to a French teacher in a study hall, I decided to begin our introduction to some of our master teachers with a French teacher, certainly a lady identified with the study of French at this school.

“Life for Madame Guiberteau, most of which she spent in the legendary language lab in the old Georgia Nelson building, was total immersion in the French language and the simple expectation that all would flourish under her skilled tutelage. All French students quickly comprehended that the name of the game was perfect French.

“Of course, French with Madame Guiberteau was not just skills and drills. Passers-by might be regaled by the sights and sounds of a dress rehearsal of one of her masterful French plays, or a rousing rendition of “La Marseilles.” She was French in action decades before Monsieur Capretz and his colleagues created their French in Action.

She was, she is, the Master Teacher supreme.
