Kindergarten: Astronomers Study the Stars

Science and Spanish teachers teamed up on an astronomy unit with kindergartners in Liza Baker's class. In dual languages, Michelle Benge and Kelly Viseur taught students about the planets in our solar system, in particular the sun (el sol), moon (la luna) and earth (la tierra).

Through songs, a design challenge in the Gates Innovation Lab, games and activities like "space yoga," students had fun learning astronomy facts. Ask your kindergartner about:
  • Names of the planets in Spanish and English
  • What the earth, sun and moon are made of
  • The order that planets circle the sun/sol
  • Unique characteristics of the earth, sun and moon
