FAVORITE PLACES: THE TILE WALL
Located in the Georgia Nelson Building, The Quilted Tile Donor Wall, is a place of joy amid the sounds of Lower School children enjoying their lives as they scurry from their classrooms to lunch, art, music, drama, etc. Designed to resemble a quilt, this project was a labor of love for parents and their children as Marilyn Foster and Cathy Naughton, among others, guided the artistic efforts of many families and Foundations. A quick glance at the wall will find names you may recognize: Kurtz, Jobin, Tapper, Boyd, Coleman, Holman, Fulford, Rickenbaugh, Caulkins, The Gates Foundation, Hirschfeld, Phipps, Precourt, Martin, the Boettcher Foundation, etc. The plaque on the wall reminds us of the importance of “preserving Graland’s past, building for its future.”
I would urge all of you to spend some time looking at these tiles. These tiles tell a tale of this school and its families in a way no book could capture. I enjoy looking at one or two each week and often smile as I recall these fine people. I have one particular favorite, a tile that bears my initials and the initials of three former students and their dynamic, lovely mother-- and the tile is Graland green.
