JOHN COMFORT: OBITUARY/PART ONE
On Thursday, September 18, 2003, Nancy Mitchell of the Rocky Mountain News wrote this lovely tribute about Mr. Comfort
“To the world at large, John Comfort was a lifelong educator, the successful and beloved Headmaster of some of Denver’s most prestigious private schools.
“To his wife of 55 years, Mr. Comfort was the 16-year-old boy who cut on on her at a club dance while she was in the arms of his friend.’And then he called me up ever after,’ Sally Comfort said Wednesday.
“To his youngest daughter, Sally Basefsky, Mr. Comfort, was the father who was always there. ’My brother was in a terrible electrical accident and lost his leg,’ she said. ‘He went through many painful procedures and my dad would be there at every single one. He would hold my brother’s hand and arm-wrestle him to get his mind on something else, and he would look him straight in the eye and say, We can get through this.’
“Basefsky said Wednesday, “He was a man who came alongside, no matter where you were and brought you to a better place. Mr. Comfort, 74, died September 10 after battling cancer. More than 400 relatives and friends attended memorial services Tuesday at Cherry Hills Community Church.
“Mr. Comfort was born on November 23, 1928, n Pelham, New York. His father was chairman of the board of a large food company there, and Mr. Comfort was the only one of four brothers who eschewed a career in big business.”
