GRALAND'S EARLY YEARS: BEYOND THE THREE R'S

Philip William Hickey
Ruth Gorham often spoke eloquently about the early years of Graland when the school emphasized the three R’s -- reading, writing, and arithmetic. At Graland, the three R’s included a study of history, for “the study of a country often correlated with all the other subjects such as art, music, English composition, literature, geography, and drama.” Kindergartners and first grade studied a “country” known as home and community. Second through seventh grades studied Native Americans, China, India, Egypt, Greece, Rome, the Medieval Times, the Renaissance, Colorado History, and the story of America. Imagine a curriculum centered around history. This is part of the magic of “old” Graland.
