PAST PARENTS REMEMBER GRALAND: PART TWO

Philip William Hickey
My original goal was to include five remembrances, but reading the letters ignited in me a desire to share more of these testaments to the school I love.

“Some of our happiest memories come from the Graland years, those crucial years when a young person’s attitudes toward productive work are formed, skills in handling are mastered, thinking for oneself becomes a necessity, and each child stands on the edge of a vast universe waiting for inspiration to reach the stars. Graland means the gentle graciousness of Miss Georgia Nelson, the inspiration of Mrs. Gorham, the encouragement of Mr. Kent, the meticulous demands for quality work by Madame Guiberteau, and the magic spark for releasing creative expression, both in writing and in speech, from Mrs. Bisbee, plus the work of all the other fine teachers who gave so much to Graland.”- Mrs. K.W. Stevenson.

I watched Graland grow. . . Both Martin and Barry were there. I think they were the happiest years of my life. There was the obstacle course across from the flagpole, replete with fox holes; the old streetcar was on the grounds where the menagerie was kept. . . A special day was May Day when Georgia seated at the top of the east steps was presented a bouquet as May queen as she watched the maypole dancers on the lawn. . . I must tell something else that shows how Georgia made Graland so great, so personal. . . One day my husband Harold brought to school our litter of black Schipperke puppies, just able to walk. She promptly summoned all the children in the lower grades into the assembly room to see them and play with them. Delightful!” Betty Cox
