FORMER GRALAND TEACHERS REMEMBER

More thoughts from others.
More thoughts from others. . .

“Graland days for me and my babies!” I remember with gratitude Georgia Nelson’s daily cheery greeting, the friendliness of the faculty, and the gentle presence of dear Elmer Nelson who gave me tranquility and spiritual inspiration.

“I have never forgotten Chet’s helpfulness on so many occasions, always with smiling willingness. Happy birthday, Graland!” -Elizabeth Kenworthy

“Only such a person as Georgia Nelson could have had the ability to build such a strong foundation through leadership, loyalty, and love -- her three l’s."

“My twenty years there as a teacher have left me with such marvelous memories. I remember the wonderful times studying about Mexico, climaxed during the Christmas pageant. The great excitement of the Moon Math Game! Many parents would phone me to see if their child had reached the moon yet. . . I remember so well the May Day program when Miss Nelson was queen; her eyes sparkled.” - Peg Watson

“I taught twelve years at Graland. Memories of the twelve years are a kaleidoscope of growth... There are days when I would give almost anything to have Georgia Nelson come by and say, ‘Darling, it’s good to have you here.’ That was all she needed to say to make me even a better teacher than I thought I could be. In those days, who cared about money? Our salaries were low. The important thing was that we taught and cared about Graland, our school.” Jane Preyer

“To answer the question, ‘Did Graland make a difference in your life?’ How to tell it? Graland WAS our life. . . Warm, silly, and wonderfully invigorating friendships; moments with Barbara Nunn. . .; Georgia Nelson who came by on Christmas Eve, the year there wasn’t any money, and slipped the anonymous relief into the mailbox; the unspoken and unquestioning support when it came time for the annual Colorado Pageant or the Easter readings or expeditions to Ghost Towns. We were privileged to share a harmonious academic atmosphere in which human beings were encouraged to be just that, always reflecting the guiding love of Georgia Nelson.” Virginia Wiebenson
