HALLOWEEN

From Rosemary Fetter’s book, Climb Every Mountain, some thoughts on a treasured tradition, the Halloween parade at Graland:

"The Halloween Parade is one of the school’s longest-standing traditions, dating back to at least 1937. For earliest generations of Graland children, beloved shop teacher Chester Preisser (or the buildings and grounds supervisor, Ray Eslinger), dressed as the Graland Ghost, led the parade around the school grounds, while princesses in admiration. The entire school still dresses up for Halloween. The only thing that has changed in the past few decades is the complexity of the costumes. In 2001 Stan Fox took five days to make his outfit, a robot made out of a box with batteries, wires, and flashing lights. 'My parents had to help me get into the costume," he says. "I couldn’t sit down, so I had to wait outside the classroom until the parade.' "
