MASTER TEACHER: NADINE MILLER (1940-1975)

Philip William Hickey
Ben Duke once told me I would have liked Nadine Miller. I don’t recall what he said, but rereading Mr. Comfort’s thoughtful words on her, I am sad that I never met her.
“Nadine represented a happy combination of the traditional and creative approach to teaching. She focused on fundamentals: reading, writing, and arithmetic. Third graders loved her math contests that honed their skills in the new concepts of multiplication and division. Nadine used daily writing skills. Her readers became more independent and were able to handle increasingly difficult material.

“Her demand for each child to give his or her best combined with her unending patience, love, and enthusiasm presented a solid environment for her third graders. Third graders did not test Nadine: they knew better. But they also knew the sincerity of her love for them. Her willingness to provide individualized support to each of her charges helped her students grow in self-assurance and to build important skills.”
