MASTER TEACHER: JUDY PROCTOR (1979- 2005)

Philip William Hickey

When I think about Nurse Judy, I rely on Rousseau’s words: “What wisdom can you find that is greater than kindness?” Judy Proctor was a nurse; we expect all nurses to be kind. Yet, Judy redefined kindness; she took care of all the children, faculty, and staff; she was blessed with a sense of humor and calm that always defused the most difficult of medical issues.

Judy’s dear friend Barb Wagner, music teacher extraordinaire as well as the former Head of Middle School and the Interim Head of School, penned this appreciation of Mrs. Dennis Proctor, our Nurse Judy:

“Judy has involved herself completely and fully in the life of Graland, serving as school nurse and health education coordinator while participating in school trips, grade=level teams, field days, auctions, and celebrations. Who can forget Judy’s advocacy for the needs of students or the positive, can-do spirit she demonstrates when facing challenges? It is difficult to imagine an individual who has given more freely of herself and her significant talents.

“In her quietly confident manner, Judy Proctor has served as a moral force in the school for twenty years. Those who have known Judy, who have had the good fortune to work with her, and watch her ‘magic’ with children, know of her unique abilities as an educator of the highest caliber -- a master teacher sine quo non.
