MASTER TEACHER: MARILYN FOSTER (1981-2001)

Philip William Hickey
Marilyn, named Yummy by Nicole, her niece, epitomized the definition of ubiquitous. In her years as Director of Special Events and Publications, she made all the “trains” run on time. Our Graland jill-of -all trades ( and "mastery" of all)  photographed so many events I have lost count.

As Ben Duke noted in the excerpt from the Master Teachers’ luncheon in 20111, Marilyn was the lady who knew everything, even where the skeletons were buried -- I should know, for I helped her bury them.

“Some personalities at a place like Graland leave their mark through flamboyance or crafting a personal legacy. Others, however, leave their mark in a much more quiet, but broadly diverse fashion. It might be through the relationships built with people providing services to the school. It might be through twenty years of Annual Reports, Graland Todays, or Intercoms brightly and creatively illustrated by serious kindergarteners. It might be through calm and composure, getting through events and programs that (would) leave others desperately seeking air and assistance.

“Marilyn, you display the very spirit Georgia Nelson sought when founding Graland: you nurture, you love, you know beautifully how to lead, how to follow, and to share. You have for twenty years demonstrated your love of the institution, its traditions, its quirks, and its spirit.”
