MASTER TEACHER: KAY HANSON (1982-2014)

Philip William Hickey
In my forty years at Graland, no one has been as revered by the faculty, parents, and students as much as Kay Hanson. She is one of my dearest friends, someone who caters to my dull culinary choices at restaurants. She also introduced me to the famous Pearl, the grande dame of Viroqua, Wisconsin.

Stan Stockdale’s thoughts on Kay serve as a tribute to this lady’s importance to the lives of those who know her:

“Of all her attributes, Kay’s best work is with kids. In her office, classic rock music provides a retro beat, and Wonder Woman presides at her desk, letting everyone know of the power within. One wall serves as a memorial to current and former students: pictures are pinned on top of one another creating a collage of smiles. These images reflect how Kay has left an indelible mark on the lives of many people who shared with her their proudest moments. There are dancers dancing, athletes fielding, scholars graduating, and couples marrying. Then, there are the handwritten notes, the somewhat twisted pieces of art, dangling mobiles, paperclip necklaces, funky souvenirs, and hand-signed chairs, all tokens serving as cherished reminders of the past. Kay is living proof of how genuine kindness, care, and support lead to lifelong friendship and admiration."
