THE FIRST THESAURUS: THE DEDICATION
As I thumbing through yearbooks last Friday, I found myself reading some yearbook dedications. This particular dedication moved me, for it was a dedication to the first three Heads of School.
I am not sure when the school dropped Thesaurus as the title of the yearbook. It’s a lovely word that emphasizes the importance of good words. The words that follow are, indeed, important:
“The staff of THE THESAURUS dedicates this first edition to Graland School: its past, its present, and its future and to the faculty and students who have made it what it is and is to come.
“Graland has grown and developed, from its small beginnings in 1927, into a school of nearly four hundred students and fifty faculty and staff members. Its alumni are scattered over the world in almost every possible field of endeavor. Each of them carries, somewhere, a piece of Graland. It may be the memory of a tree planting or an award. It may be something made in the shop or in art or craft. But probably this piece of Graland is the knowledge that each of them and us has been aided in our growth, both physical and mental, by this school.
“What is Graland? Graland is people. People like Miss Georgia Nelson, our first Director, who formed this school and brought it from the past to the present; from idea to reality. People like Fred Locke, Headmaster from 1960-1963, who further aided Graland in its development. People like Mr. Comfort who now further guides Graland toward its goal of becoming and remaining the very best school anywhere.
“Graland is people like like Miss Genevieve Jones and Mr. Chester Preisser who have been at Graland since it is beginning and exemplify Graland loyalty. It is these people and others like them who have made and are making Graland what it is and what it will be.
“It is to this place, this idea, and these people, in appreciation for their continuing gifts to us and the community, that we dedicate this book.”

Graland Country Day School
