PERMANENT ART COLLECTION

Philip William Hickey
One of the most impressive all-school assemblies is the Permanent Art Collection assembly every fall. Like the Spring Art Show, it salutes our students who flourish under the guidance of our art teachers, currently Andrean Andrus, Andrea Crane, and Cathy Naughton.
I must add these framed pieces of art displayed all over the school represent a very tangible part of our school’s history, as well as the school’s Guiding Principles. Imagine what our walls would look like without our artwork.

Thanks to Rosemary Fetter, we have a record of the birth of the Permanent Art Collection: “Initiated by Cathy Naughton in 1977, (it) began with a single piece, a watercolor of a daffodil painted by Heidi Lasher. According to Cathy, ‘I framed the very piece with glass I took from a broken window in the Georgia Nelson building and some scrap wood from the shop.’ In 1982, Andrean Andrus, Brett DeBoer, Cathy Naughton, and the students officially presented the first pieces of the Permanent Art Collection to the school.”

When the school was producing printed Graland calendars for the school, for a few years we featured our students’ artwork each month. Also, we had greeting cards and note cards. It was a wonderful idea. I wish these simple “traditions” had lasted. Subtle hint!
