Does it surprise anyone that it was Georgia Nelson who brought the fourth grade Olympics to the school? This inspiring woman was always thinking about how to improve her school.

“In conjunction with the study of Greek history, fourth-graders recreated the pageantry of the Olympics at the beginning of Field Day. The ceremony has changed over the decades. All Lower School students march out onto the field, the flag is raised, and the national anthem was sung. After opening speeches, two teachers or staff members are selected to reign over the festivities as god or goddess. Finally, the students take the Olympic oath, the torch is carried around the track and everyone shouts, ‘On with the games.’ Now strictly a Lower School activity, Field Day incorporates events such as relay races and jump rope competitions.”

In the last few years, this event has evolved into the Special Olympics, another wonderful event.
