Sunday, August 24, 7-9 p.m., Cranmer Park
Join your neighbors and friends for a special benefit concert to restore the sundial and plaza at Cranmer Park. Petals of Spain and other local musicians will perform famous songs about the sun, like “Here Comes the Sun” and “Tequila Sunrise.”

The event is the brainchild of Graland alumna Alison Koff ‘11, who developed the idea for a school project around the same time that the Sundial Plaza was named to Colorado’s Most Endangered Places list.

The Cranmer Park landmark is near and dear to the hearts of many Graland alumni and families. A recent Denver Post article on August 12, 2014, also describes its historical and local significance:

“The plaza contains an old sundial that was donated by park founder George Cranmer in 1941. After it was damaged in the 1960s, it was rebuilt. But now the plaza is deteriorating and needs $1.5 million in repairs. The sundial is seen as the centerpiece of the 24-acre park; the plaza also has a panorama piece that is well known. The plaza was once the highest point in the city of Denver and the best place to view the mountains. Five 14ers can be seen on a clear day, including Pikes Peak to the south and Longs Peak to the north.”

Alison and her team at The Park People and Save Our Sundial are hoping for a large turn out – and generous support.

“I hope you and your family will come and enjoy the picnic style concert,” she says. “There will be food trucks and activities for younger children. Then, consider a donation to the restoration of the plaza and sundial.”

Donations can be mailed to The Park People at 1510 S. Grant Street, Denver, CO 80210.  You can also donate online. A total of $1 million is needed from private sources to complete the repairs.

Come out to support these efforts, appreciate great music and enjoy the company of your friends and neighbors.
