Grades 3/4: Creative Minds Needed!

With the recent release of the 2016 Odyssey of the Mind challenges, our Graland team members are using the summer to get their thinking caps on before the start of the regional competition that will have them returning to defend their championship title. In 2014, two teams of Graland third graders competed for the first time and won first place at regionals and third place at state, also winning first place in the Spontaneous portion of both competitions.

Odyssey of the Mind is an international competition that believes creativity can be taught. Children are given problems that must be solved ranging from very technical problems to performance-oriented problems. Following very specific guidelines and using a limited budget, children work as a team to creatively approach and resolve the challenges.

“One of the amazing experiences I had as a coach was to watch softer spoken children find their voices, to see leaders emerge and to see the team delegate to the ones who could possibly do a better job when they really wanted to do it themselves,” says Shannon Bell.

Odyssey of the Mind promotes innovation, creativity, values, teamwork and respect. Students in Grades 3/4 as well as volunteer coaches are welcome to join the fun in 2015-16. Contact Shannon Bell for more information.
