Decimals on the Road: Fifth Graders Plan the Ultimate Adventure

Kat Diez Canseco
Fifth grade students in Meggan Dodge's math class are taking their decimal skills to the next level by planning the ultimate road trip! Students are learning how decimals play a crucial role in real-world scenarios, like planning a vacation. As part of the project, students choose a destination that holds personal significance to them. They then calculate the mileage, gas expenses, and budget for extras like hotels, food, and local attractions.
By doing so, they gain a deeper understanding of how decimals impact every aspect of their journey. Students also explore how decimals are essential in various aspects of life beyond road trips, like time, money, and distance/measurement. To showcase their knowledge, students get creative with their unique presentation in the form of a slide show, brochure, travel guide, video, or poster.

Through this project, students are discovering how essential math and decimals are in everyday situations. By learning how to articulate decimals in tenths/hundredths/thousandths to create exact numbers, they will be able to make informed decisions and solve problems with accuracy in various scenarios.
