Message from the Head of Lower School

Backpack? Check. School clothes? Check. Positive attitude? Check. Yes, you are ready for an awesome year! How quickly summer concludes and our thoughts turn to preparing for the start of school. August is one of my favorite times of the year. I love the excitement of beginning each new school year and eagerly await welcoming our students and hearing their great summer stories.
Backpack?

I’m thrilled to be part of a team comprised of teachers, administrators, parents, and students who want to achieve great things! Our faculty, staff, and I are looking forward to a new school year and are working hard to see that your child’s learning experience at Graland is a successful and happy one.

As the year begins, here are a few important things to remember…

We are on your team. Parenting in today’s climate is extremely difficult and we are here to help. Children face struggles, children make mistakes -- that is their job and that is how they learn. We view these mistakes as opportunities to learn and grow, not a reflection on your parenting skills.

We love communication. Our teachers are accessible and want to hear from you. If your child is worried or upset, we can talk over different options and support that can help your child find a successful solution.

We recognize the value of time. Children have their own time table: when they take their first steps, when they begin to walk and when they are ready to read. Every child has a growth pattern. Try not to compare your child to others.

We know there will be good days and not-so-good days. The school year ebbs and flows and there will be days when your child doesn’t want to come to school, feels lonely or worried, or argues with you over homework. This is the time to take a breath, listen more and talk less.

We are a community. As parents and educators, we all want Graland students to achieve intellectual excellence, develop strong character, and be thoughtful leaders. By being a welcoming community, we can model the behavior we want to see in our students.

We are eagerly waiting to welcome you to another wonderful school year and look forward to seeing families and students very soon!

Warmest Regards,
