CHET, THE OWL/CIRCA 1973
The following is an excerpt from a fundraising brochure. At that time, Harley Higbie was the chair of our Board. The smaller room in the library used over the years as a library classroom, a reference room, a computer room, and the media room was named in his honor when Katie Dodge was the Head Librarian.
“Chet, the Owl came into being early this fall, compliments of Mr. Pat Oliphant, to symbolize the many aspects of Graland. Recognizing all the fun to be derived from a school mascot, we enlisted the help of Mr. Oliphant who created the owl, after which names were suggested by students and their families.
“Students then voted on a selected list of names and came up with Chester (or Chet) in honor of Graland’s long-time favorite teacher and friend, Chet Preisser.
“Thus, Chet, the Owl was born. We hope he will have as many years of Graland association as has his namesake.”
Alas, the eagle replaced the owl. Bring back the mighty -- and intelligent -- owl! Change is not always good. Go, Owls! Go away, Eagles!
